about+squareQ & A with Kate:

Tell us a little about yourself… (age, background, fun facts, where you’re from, etc.) Lets see, my name is Katherine Adair Freeman, I go by Kate and I'm 25 years old. I was born and raised here in Jackson. I have a twin brother and a younger sister, my brother lives in Texas and my sister, New York. I received an art scholarship to Delta State University and went to school in the delta for a year. I then transferred to Ole Miss and completed my BFA with an emphasis in painting. Currently, I live in Jackson with my cat, Tom. We've lived in the Belhaven neighborhood for almost 2 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in Jackson. Some fun facts about myself; I read magazines starting from the back cover, I hate grasshoppers, I'm vegetarian and I love to go camping. How long have you been painting and how did you make the jump to selling your art? I started painting in early high school. I began taking art classes from oil painter, Bob Tompkins and continued to take his classes for about three years. I started to take advanced art classes in high school and new that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I made the jump to start selling my art when I was about 18 years old. I loved knowing that someone actually wanted a piece of MY art. It is the greatest feeling! How does Mississippi play a role in your business?Screen Shot 2015-04-13 at 10.21.39 AM It plays a major roll in my art business because I live here, I studied in Mississippi and met so many inspirational folks here! Mississippi has so many hidden gems! Plus, I sell my art at Interiors Lounge around the corner and have been involved in multiple art shows around the state. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Currently with my new series, I'm grabbing inspiration from the neighborhood I live in, the spring colors and also working right next to a floral studio that bursts with color and beauty; Tulip. What are your goals and vision for your brand? My ultimate goal is to eventually be a painter full-time. But that will take some time, lots of time ha! But right now my goal is to just keep painting and growing as a visual artist. I try to grab inspiration through traveling as much as possible, camping and being surrounded by creative souls. product+3 Where do you see yourself and your brand in 5 years? I see myself as hopefully a full-time painter, being swamped with commission work, gradually added new pieces and pages to my website and traveling around the world with my boyfriend. What do you like to do when you aren’t creating/painting? When I'm not painting/creating I am working at the most creative, lively and inspirational store in Jackson, MS.. Thimblepress of course :) When I'm not at work, you can find me riding my bike, camping in state parks or lounging watching Netflix with Justin, give or take a glass of wine. What are your favorite local places to shop and dine? Some of my favorite shops are the little hidden antique stores around town. I try to catch a few Estate Sales, maybe a yard sale and then I do a good bit of online shopping. My favorite places to dine are Apothecary, Saltine Oyster Bar and Aladdin. How do you think your art and your businessScreen Shot 2015-04-13 at 10.21.14 AM are helping to shape the local community and the image of MS? I really have so much faith in Jackson, MS. I've seen it's ups and mega downs and currently it is rising up and up! I am so happy to be involved in the arts here. We have so many supporters and many creative artists that reside here. So to think that I am apart of that community makes my heart jump with joy. Nothing is more pleasing than to see a community come together and support local artists! Mississippi has so much to offer within the art world and the talent is just bursting each day! I hope my business gives other artists the inspiration to keep on going! I see so many talented artists just give up after college and I really encourage all artist to never give it up!
