What exactly is Maidenhair Floral? In a very broad sense, Maidenhair is my creative space in life. It's my chance to connect with others and share beauty through creativity and design. On a more practical level, Maidenhair is my floral and event design business. The majority of my work is for weddings, but I'm always up for other events and interesting projects! I typically work with design-conscious couples and provide custom floral design for their weddings. In many cases I also handle the event design which means that I'm there to pull the visual details together and translate their vision into a beautiful and intentional experience for their family and loved ones. It's a huge honor! How did you all get started and what was the inspiration to take the small business leap? I've always had my hand in one creative project or another. During my college years I had the chance to work with a couple of amazing floral designers in the Mississippi delta, and that's where my love of flowers was born. Eight years ago I did my first wedding, and in 2014 I decided to make this more than an occasional thing - that's when I officially launched Maidenhair.(image by: Laura Meek Photography)
How does Mississippi play a role in your business?
My clients are here, and whether they are native to the state or find themselves transplanted from elsewhere, Mississippi is woven into their lives. There is something special about this place, and I love the chance to help it shine! My clients are here, and whether they are native to the state or find themselves transplanted from elsewhere, Mississippi is woven into their lives. There is something special about this place, and I love the chance to help it shine! In 2015 I had the wonderful experience of decorating the Mississippi Governor's mansion for Christmas. It was such a joy and an honor! What are your goals for your brand? My goals are to create beauty and to connect with others in a meaningful way. I try to keep those things in the forefront and stay open to opportunities as they arise. It's pretty exciting!(Image by: Nikki McKenzie Photography)
What is your background?
I worked for 12 years as a maternal/newborn nurse. Completely unrelated to flowers and creativity but it was full of great lessons on serving and working with others. Where do you find inspiration? Sounds cliche but I find so much inspiration in nature. I absolutely love the small details - a tender fern curl, the flower of a hellebore as it braves the cold winter weather, the texture of a piece of driftwood found while paddling the Strong River... Beauty surrounds us, and when I take the time the notice, I'm always inspired.(Image by Ashley Upchurch Photography)
What do you like to do when you aren't creating/ designing? As a wife and mother of three kids I have to be honest - one of my favorite things is having absolutely nothing on the calendar! It's a rare occurrence and such a treat to just see what the day brings... Having time in the yard with my family, visiting with a neighbor who happens to stroll by, lunch with my parents and sister, baking a sweet treat with my daughter. Sounds like a perfect day to me! What are your favorite local places to shop and dine? That's a hard one because we have such great food here in Jackson, but some of my favorites are Thai House, Edo, Bravo, and Babalu. As for shopping... I'm a sucker for thrift shops and estate sales - I love things that have their own history. :)\i (Image by: Ashleigh Coleman)
What are some of the reasons you call Mississippi home?
Mississippi is where I was born and raised, and my favorite people are here! After a wonderful stint in NYC for my husband's graduate studies we returned to MS to raise a family. 10 years and three kids later, here we are, and for anyone who has never visited - our little neighborhood of Fondren is quite a jewel! How do you think what you are doing is helping to shape your local community as well as the image of Mississippi? Going back to my goals of connecting with others and creating beauty - I have to think that pursuing these things could only be good for my community and state. In the past year I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing creatives, including a few fabulous photographers. Some of our collaborative work has been published in nationally and internationally read blogs and magazines, and I have to say that it sure makes me happy to see our Mississippi looking so good!. . .
Isn't she a gem? We sure do think so and she brings SO much beauty to our community! Want to see more inspiring photos and floral? Check Jessie out here:
