Mississippi Monday | A Tour of Vicksburg

As Mississippians, when we think of Vicksburg, we think of history- military parks, battlefields, museums- it's importance is history is grand and a trip there will fill you with both a vast knowledge of the past as well as a sense of nostalgia. History oozes from the streets and lingers in the air there, it's really quite an experience just to tour around for a time. And today, we're happy to have guest editor Katie Corley of #TheMississippiExperience back on The Thread to share through photo and word about her recent road trip there...

The morning started off with bright white, overcast skies and a chilly breeze rolling off the river. Despite the cold, it was a lovely morning to stroll through downtown Vicksburg. To take a break from the cold I ventured into the Lower Mississippi River Museum. The museum is free to the public and fun for both kids and adults! Once you make your way through the museum, there’s a back door that leads to the ship that anyone can go explore. There’s three different levels, all set up to feel as if you were actually in that time period.

Next, I was able to get a short tour of ‘The Vicksburg’, the tallest and one of the oldest in town. The Vicksburg used to be a grand hotel, but is now currently an apartment complex with awesome views of the city. The interior is extravagantly decorated and worth seeing if you’re ever in town.

Last stop on my adventure was Cedar Grove Mansion. By the time I arrived, the sun finally peaked through the clouds. The whole neighborhood was filled with lovely antebellum homes. The grounds at Cedar Grove were just as enchanting as its interior. It’s totally worth scheduling a tour to experience a piece of Mississippi history.
