. . .
What/who exactly is Capital City Kayaks?
Capital City Kayaks, provides rentals, tours & adventures for those looking for a fun, alternative activity here in the Jackson-Metro area!
How did you get started and what was the inspiration to take the small business leap?
Kayaking is something that I've been doing for many years and loved to introduce to my friends. Unfortunately none of them had kayaks or a means of even transporting them. After lots of thought, consideration, research and planning I came up with a solution to a problem. I started Capital City Kayaks as means of introducing people to new experiences and to utilize the AMAZING waterways we have here in the Jackson-Metro area.
How does Mississippi play a role in your business?
Mississippi, especially Jackson, is filled with folks looking for something new. Whether if it's a new opportunity, a new restaurant, or just a new experience.
What are your goals for your brand? My goal is to be an established name within the community. I want to be known for providing an educational, fun, safe, and affordable activity for those looking for an adventure right here in their own backyard. Strides are also being made to get people more involved in keeping our waterways & creeks clean. I've also started looking into grants that would allow funding to expand my business to better serve the community and the environment.
What is your background?
Born & raised in Jackson, MS. Graduated from Murrah high school in 2008. Graduated from Hinds Community College in 2010, & Mississippi State University in 2012 with a BS in Biology Education. I'm currently a full time science teacher & track coach.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from within myself. I'm always looking to operate more effectively, learn more and be better than I was before.
What do you like to do when you aren't "at the office"?
When I'm not "at the office", whether that office is my classroom, the track or on the river, I love to play team trivia, play sports with my pals, and do DIY projects around the house.
What are your favorite local places to shop and dine?
Offbeat alternative store in MidTown Jackson is one of my favorite places to buy records and other oddities, Rainbow Organic Grocery in Fondren, & I appreciate a good garage sale!
What are some of the reasons you call Mississippi home?
Mississippi has always been home and will continue be home for many many years to come. I love the food, the community, the slow pace, the low cost of living, & the scenic views.
How do you think what you are doing is helping to shape your local community as well as the image of Mississippi?
Most feel that they need to drive for hours to another city to kayak and experience nature. I'm providing a service that allows people to get a grand experience right here in the city! About 70% of my tours are with first timers who had no idea that they could kayak minutes from their home! I'm creating new experiences, educating the public, as well as utilizing and promoting, the natural resources here in our area for recreational uses without causing any harm.
How gorgeous is that view?!
