Happy Monday, everybody! Today, it's #mississippimonday, and we’re excited to feature Mississippi Mane!
. . .What/who exactly is Mississippi Mane? Mississippi Mane and Co. is a small business out of Clinton, Mississippi that focuses on handmade, natural beard care.
How did you get started and what was the inspiration to take the small business leap?
Once I first learned that I needed to care for my beard like I do for the rest of my body, I immediately began trying to create products for my personal use. I devised and customized all kinds of recipes and didn’t stop until I made something that was truly satisfying. However, the business leap wasn’t something I wanted to jump in to immediately, and I actually resisted it for quite a while. People eventually kind of pushed me to jump head first into the small business world. Looking back, I’m really glad I did.
How does Mississippi play a role in your business?
For starters, we put Mississippi in our name. We’re proud of where we’re from. We also created our popular “Sweet Magnolia” scent to pay homage to the flower of our home state as well.
What are your goals for your brand?
We would like to branch out across Mississippi and eventually to other states as well. To help get our name out, we set up at a lot of out-of-town markets to offer our beard care to other areas of Mississippi. No matter how big we grow, we want to stay true to our small business roots and keep our supplies and materials as local as possible.
What is your background?
This is my first business. I actually never had dreams of owning my own business. It just kind of happened. I’ve been a schoolteacher for several years now, and in my free time, I just stayed busy with different hobbies or travelling. I’ve grown lots of beards over the years of my youth, and I wish I knew back then what I know now about beard care.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in being different. That’s what started the Mississippi Mane and Co. brand. We create unique blends and signature scents not found elsewhere. We don’t want to make something that just fits in quietly with everything else offered out there. We take pride in crafting our products.
What do you like to do when you aren’t at the office.
Go outside. Backpacking, snowboarding, kayaking, mountain biking, skimboarding, and anything that involves the outdoors.
What are your favorite places to shop and dine?
Local coffee houses like Cups are a favorite as well as our local outfitters Paxton Peak. What are some of the reasons you call Mississippi home?
Mississippi is where I was born and raised. I spent my youth walking and working on my parents’ land in the small town of Flora. I’ve lived here all of my life. I’ve done my fair share of traveling, but I always feel back at home when I’m driving down the interstate and see that “Welcome to Mississippi” sign. How do you think what you are doing is helping to shape your local community as well as the image of Mississippi?
I was actually quite surprised by the support we received from our local community when we started. We’ve made sure to set up our booth at every local event possible. Not just to sell our products, but also to support these community gatherings that give people an opportunity to find and learn about local artisans and small businesses that may be hidden within their community. We’re doing our best to show that beards don’t have to be unkempt and uncared for, and at the same time, we’re showing that the people of Mississippi can be makers and manufacturers.
As they say at Mississippi Mane, "Go forth and be manly."
