What/Who exactly is Wyatt Waters?
I am a guy who paints and loves the arts.
How did you all get started and what was the inspiration to take the small business leap?I started a gallery in an attempt to combine my life with my profession. It didn't exactly go the way I had planned but I am content with it now.
How does Mississippi play a role in your business?
The things I grew up with here are the subjects of my art. I paint on location. The weather is reasonable most of the time, and even when it's not, the elements are not too much of a challenge. Our contrasts and conflicts make their way into my paintings.
What are your goals for your brand?I want to make art available to everyone. My gallery offers items at every price point, starting with gift cards at $3.50. I think this idea came from going to museums and leaving through museum gift shops. We try to produce a calendar every year with images that people can easily frame. There are also limited edition prints that I produce in house, a variety of gift items, and of course original watercolor paintings ranging in price based on size. My standard sizes start at 7.5 x 7.5, and go up to 22 x 30, although I have worked larger and I would like to more.
Art is for everybody but they have to choose it. I want everyone to feel welcome here. What is your background?
I was brought up in a small town and still have a lot of that viewpoint. I began painting at age two and had private art lessons very early. I studied art at Mississippi College and earned my Masters degree. I have always painted.
Where do you all find inspiration?I heard someone say that inside everyone is a novel. It is the story of their life. This is my life. All the things, places, and people surrounding me make their ways into my painting.
What do you all like to do when you aren't creating/building?
I like songwriting in my spare time. I enjoy keeping a journal and I like my dog.
What are your favorite local places to shop and dine?On my off days I make the rounds thrifting. In thrift stores, everything is a possibility and only one of each. If something doesn't fit or has a crack, I have learned to let it go. I like drinking coffee in coffee shops and sometimes nibbling pastries with friends.
What are some of the reasons you call Mississippi home?
I am a bloom where I'm planted person. I think I've said most of this already. It's all around me and even in me. My family has been here longer than we've been a state. We aren't where we should be all the time, but the chance for growth is very appealing and I want to be part of that.
How do you think what you are doing is helping to shape your local community as well as the image of Mississippi?I began art as a solitary pursuit. Now I see the purpose it has in creating community. I like working with our Main Street program in Clinton and seeing the chance for this business area to be a catalyst for for people to congregate. The gallery been here for about 17 years now. The arts are always important in growing community.
