Turn The Tables - Question 3

What are your favorite apps and why?
I have so many apps that I love. Seriously, it is an addiction. I keep them all organized in little folders on my iphone like photography, finances, use a lot, productivity, music, social, shopping. I know, I am am organized nut. I get it from my mama. My favorite apps for photo editing are Photoshop Express, CINEMAGRAPH, VSCO, A Color Story, #VVFY, & Flipagram. Some of my other favorite apps are Apsana (we use for task management on our team), Alexa (I use it with my Amazon Echo & Echo Dot... If you don't have one get one!), Spotify for music, IFTTT (For automation between apps), Zoom (for web calls and meetings), Fiverr (for random tasks and silly things), Jesus Calling (for daily devotional), & Dragon Dictation for my thoughts on the go. Now, I could have gone on and one about other apps I use, but I really tried to narrow it down to a few favorites outside of the social media ones we all use! Happy reading and have a fantastic week! -Kristen

For photo editing, my favorite app is A Color Story. I’m currently obsessed with their new FLASHES OF DELIGHT filters created by The Glitter Guide. I also use Planoly to help curate my Instagram feed. I’ve been trying to brush up on my FRENCH and have recently started using the Duolingo Language App. So far its working great and have a goal to spend 15 min a day.

I use A Color Story for editing my photos for social media, and it has really brought a cohesive feeling to my brand. Other favorite apps: Instagram (visual and beautiful) Shopify (for our shop) and Trello (for project management).

The most useful app that I have is MileIQ— I always have very lofty goals of writing down all of my mileage and NEVER remember to do it. MileIQ automatically logs all of the drives that you take. I can’t tell you how many more miles I’m able to claim on taxes because of it.

Also, I couldn’t live without DropBox. I find myself working in all kinds of places, so it’s very helpful to have all the files that I need anywhere that I need them. I mean, if a friend invites me up to their cabin over the weekend, but I still need to do some work, you’re not going to catch me at the office when I can bring it with me!

I don’t necessarily have favorites but rather apps that I use all the time for my businesss. Evernote, Dropbox, Instagram, Photoshop Express, and Foodie. Evernote is where I track all of my to-dos and share notes with my team about project details. Dropbox is essential for pulling hi-res images that I’ve saved so that I can repost on Instagram. Photoshop Express and Foodie are my absolute go to apps for photo editing. I am surprised Foodie is not a widely known app- but seriously go download it. You will not regret it. I use filter Yum5 ALL THE TIME for my Instagram photos. It’s the best.

I like to have as few apps on my phone as possible, and I keep all notifications off. I’m very strict on my social media and app boundaries simply because very often the ‘convenience’ of apps can turn into more distraction. What starts as ‘research’ can turn into a rabbit hole scroll, right?

However, I do keep a few beyond the typical email, Instagram and Facebook, etc. The Amazon app is great because it’s usually while I’m in line at the grocery when I remember I need to bulk order more office supplies, and Amazon Prime is the best. A fun new photography app called Filmborn has been fun to test out. The Calm app is my favorite meditation app, and I really appreciate the Cash app when I’m at a shoot and can easily pay an intern or contributor back for buying lunch or something.

I spent a great deal of time journaling about ways I can detach from my phone, especially when my children are present. Sometimes I will put music on my phone and leave it on a bookshelf or put it on the charger in another room. Part of detaching was deleting a lot of apps. That said, my iPhone is pretty dang useful and I really could not live without it!

For business, I use the point of sale app by Square to accept credit cards. I also love using the Hyperlapse app to capture painting or drawing demos and Flipagram is helpful for me to compose multiple photos set to a certain speed to use on Instagram (I’ve never used it socially). The TED app is great when I want to listen to inspiring audio while I paint and love the Mnf Mindfulness app to take a moment to meditate. Being a creative and self-employed it’s essential that I take time for meditation and some mental gymnastics.

I’m a fan of my Shopify app so I can stay on top of my store and how it’s doing when I’m away from my computer. I also like using apps like Slack to keep up with communication with my Mastermind group… and of course Instagram! One of my favorite apps, though, is one that I don’t use myself…my customer happiness team is made up of stay-at-home moms. I purposely hire women who want to be able to make a little extra money for their family but want to be at home with their kids, so we use Desk for our CRM. I love that my team can use the Desk app so they can respond to emails while taking their kids to the park, in the waiting room of the doctor’s office or even while they are grocery shopping. We respond to all emails within the same business day, so it allows us to offer excellent customer service, but I love that my team has that flexibility so that they really can be at home while working.

- Snapseed, a fantastic photo editing app by Google that allows you to make changes to a selected smaller portion of the photo. - Asana, a project management godsend! - Quick Books (aforementioned) - Dropbox (so that all of our files are available on all of our devices - we can work from anywhere if the studio's getting too nutty). - Spotify, for both creating both client-meeting-appropriate and after-hours-get-it-done-dirty-rap playlists.

I don’t do much of that. I spend most of my time finding writers and polishing their projects for publication. However, on the back end (once a book is published), I’m obsessed with what moves the needle in terms of a book moving off the shelf and I’ve become super interested in companies like Live Intent that cull data and target potential buyers.

I love PicTapGo for photo editing. As a graphic designer, it's a little hard to admit that I use Canva for quick social media posts. I love using Box.com for cloud-based file storage - I like the interface better and I can also upload directly to social media from the app, saving space on my phone. I also am obsessed with Trello for project management and I use that in conjunction with Slack to communicate with my team. My favorite personal app other than Goodbudget is Grocery Store IQ which is a cloud-based app that I share with my husband as a grocery list. I'm not sure our relationship with survive without it!

I shoot all of my photos on my iPhone, and edit them in an app called Afterlight. With a few simple clicks (I'm a fan of increased brightness and decreased contrast) my phone pics look professional. I also got a desktop phone holder that lets me style hands free for the perfect insta-overhead shot :)

I love any apps that make things easier! Some of my favorites include Later.com (which allows you to schedule Instagram posts) and Repost App for easy sharing of Instagram posts. When it comes to booking travel, I am in love with SkyScanner. It’s an app that quickly compares all flights (and hotels!) from all sources so you can easily find the best rates. I also love having Dropbox on my phone so I can easily grab and share files on the go.

For a calendar I use Simpliday. It's the best visual calendar since Sunrise app went away! For exercise I use Asana Rebel - yoga on the go! This app has revolutionized the way I exercise, take care of my back and makes it easy to relax or strengthen my body. When I am wanting to read something, my go to is Audible. I go for long walks and take my newest favorite (non biz books) with me! You can find me giggling to myself on occasion! Audible turns all of your favorite books into easy listening audio, so you can listen on the go.
I also have a white noise sound mixer, Noisli. My friend Nicole Yang of the Cultivate What Matters team told me about this app. You can combine different sounds to make your own perfect background noise

I use the ‘My Shopify’ app to access our admin page while I’m out and about. I look at every single order that comes in - even while I’m standing in line at grocery store or waiting for an appointment. The pros AND cons of this are that I never ever stop working! For photo editing, I use A Color Story and Rad Lab. I also use my phone to listen to podcasts while I’m in the car - I listen to all sorts of business-related podcasts like “How I Built This,” “Being Boss,” and “Shopify Masters.”

Ooh, my can’t-live-without business apps are asana and A Color Story. Asana is a free project management app that I use to keep all my projects straight and communicate with my team, and A Color Story is how I edit all my photos for Instagram.

Honestly, I’m so in the digital world that I try to only be on my phone for work reasons. So all of the apps I use are business oriented: VSCO for photo editing, Tiny Scanner for scanning and sending documents, Evernote for remembering all sorts of things and sharing them with my team, and of course, I live and breathe by my Google Calendar. The only personal apps I have are Breathe, which is a meditation app, and My Fitness Pal for keeping my fitness and calories in check.

I love using A Color Story for photo editing, Planoly for social media scheduling and Asana for real-time project management and team coordination for my projects. Google KEEP is also excellent! It’s like a digital version of a note pad.

Does Instagram count?! We have the greatest amount of engagement on that platform, so that’s where most of our energy is focused. Part of my duties involve managing Instagram, so I use that to justify the all time I spend scrolling. We use Hootsuite to draft and schedule posts across all social media. VSCO is my favorite photo editing app, though I also love A Color Story.
